Present Continuous in English
🇪🇸 Para hispanohablantes: El Present Continuous equivale a ESTAR + gerundio en español (estoy comiendo, estás hablando). Se forma con AM/IS/ARE + verbo-ING.
The Present Continuous (also called Present Progressive) describes actions happening right now, temporary situations, and future arrangements. It is formed with am/is/are + verb-ing.
The Formula
"I am working." | "She is eating." | "They are playing."
Spelling Rules for -ing
⚠️ Stative Verbs — Never use -ing!
These verbs describe states, not actions. They CANNOT be used in continuous tenses:
Example Sentences
I am studying English right now.
🇪🇸 Estoy estudiando inglés ahora mismo.
She is working from home today.
🇪🇸 Ella está trabajando desde casa hoy.
They are traveling to Mexico next week.
🇪🇸 Viajan a México la semana que viene.
He is always losing his keys!
🇪🇸 ¡Siempre está perdiendo sus llaves!
We are learning a lot these days.
🇪🇸 Estamos aprendiendo mucho estos días.
The population is growing fast.
🇪🇸 La población está creciendo rápido.
Common Mistakes for Spanish Speakers
❌ Using continuous with stative verbs
Verbs like know, want, love, believe cannot use -ing form. ❌ 'I am knowing the answer' ✅ 'I know the answer'. ❌ 'She is wanting coffee' ✅ 'She wants coffee'
❌ Forgetting the verb 'to be'
Spanish can drop estar in some cases but English CANNOT. ❌ 'She studying' ✅ 'She is studying'. Always need am/is/are before the -ing form.
❌ Wrong -ing spelling
For short verbs ending in consonant+vowel+consonant, double the last consonant: run→running, sit→sitting, swim→swimming.
❌ Present continuous vs present simple
Present simple = habits/facts ('I work in Madrid'). Present continuous = happening now ('I am working from home today').
